5280 Legion @ LVO 2022
A 5280 perspective on the biggest in person event in legion
The team showed up in force! We had 10 players from 5280 Legion travel for the event, representing about ~10% of the field. Everyone had a blast competing, hanging out after the events, and making new friends along the way. We could write a novella covering the bat reps and stories from the event, but this post will focus on the creative and competitive achievements from the team.
5280 Creativity
Terrain
5280 was tapped to help provide a few of the many awesome tables of terrain for the event! All of the terrain for the event was beautiful, and the TO’s/judges did a great job setting up and arranging each table in a way that was thematic as well as competitive. Of the many compliments the legion community received from other gamers at the event, how stand out all of the tables were was a frequent accolade. Well done to everyone who provided terrain, and special shoutout to Mike Stocker (@SuperAides) for transporting the 5280 tables from Colorado to Vegas for the event.
The tables provided by 5280 were:
Fallen Temple by Stephen Cobb (@ASpaceViking),
Geonosis by Joe Lanza (@Ezsvns)
Black Spire Outpost by Zander Woolley (@Voidwolf)
Zander’s table received special recognition by being chosen to be showcased on stream at the event! (https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1281649155 beginning at about the 13 minute mark)
Painting Recognition
There was no shortage of amazing looking armies at LVO, and the painting competition held on Saturday was stacked. While everyone did an incredible job, one 5280 member, Tony Hunter (@Huntsman) received special recognition for his Desert Tiger Imperial LAAT, and was awarded the TO’s Choice Award. Not only is the paint job beautiful, but Tony worked in some electronics so that his LAAT had led lighting and played the songs ‘‘Flight of the Valkyries”, ”Fortunate Son”, and “Paint it Black'“ to push the theming to 11! Check it out on Youtube.
While the article isn’t up yet (link coming soon!) a photographer from the website spikeybits.com loved Tony’s work and said it would be featured in an upcoming post!
The King of the Mountains Bounty
5280 decided to spice up the competition by hosting our own unique bounty challenge - The King of the Mountains badge challenge.
For the bounty, any player who defeated a a member of 5280 legion in the 2-day championship event was awarded a metal 5280 badge to commemorate their victory! Whoever claimed the most victory badges at the end of the event was crowned The King of the Mountains for LVO 2022.
Numerous players claimed badges, but ultimately @Kraylic was crowned the champion with 3 badges!
Sharing mementos to commemorate our games was a lot of fun, and you can be sure we’ll be doing something like this again. The victory badges went home with competitors all around the world, including this badge posted by @Octobaer headed to Berlin!
5280 Competitively
5280 Legion members participated in and put on stellar performances in all of the events!
Main Event
We had 4 players make the second day cut:
Dustin Grorud (@KUPiranha) - Vader T21 Stormline
Tony Hunter (@Huntsman) - Vader T21 Stormline
William Wallace (@PneumaticPanic) - Double the Fall
Zander Woolley (@VoidWolf) - Cassian, K2, Wookiees, and Bus
Additionally, both Zander and Dustin went home with very respectable 5-1 records, which is no small feat at a tournament of this size.
Unconventional Warfare was an absolute blast.
The event had special list building rules for 800pt armies with special perks depending on which force org chart you chose. You had the option to Lead From the Front using 3-5 commanders + operatives and up to 4 special forces, or you could utilize Overwhelming Firepower with up to 3 heavies and up to 4 support units.
Our very own Joe Lanza (@Ezsvsns) took home first place in the event with his triple airspeeder list and received a force flask (check out 6upSupply.com if you’re curious) along with the glory for his efforts!
5280 also performed well at the Doubles Event.
Teams of two built 600pt armies each and combined their forces to play in pre-set objectives, deployments and conditions. This format allowed for some truly crazy combos such as Palpatine pulling the strings on an infiltrated Iden and having 7 lightsabers in one list!
Two 5280 teams went undefeated and earned prizes for their efforts:
Exactly 5280 Droids - Stephen Cobb (@ASpaceViking) + William Wallace (@PneumaticPanic) with Dooku, Grievous and Maul.
Partner Swingers - Joe Lanza (@Ezsvsns) + Zander Woolley (@VoidWolf) with their Lando, Chewie, Han, double heavies, and loaded Veterans list.
Wrap Up
The event was an amazing success, and I’m personally very grateful for everyone who travelled out to the event from Colorado’s 5280 Legion group, as well as for all of the friends we made along the way. Performing well in the events is exciting, but ultimately being good ambassadors for the game and community is what’s most important to us. It warmed my heart to hear compliments from numerous players that their favorite games were against 5280 Legion players because we shared the same goals as them - having a blast and making friends while rolling dice.
Additionally, 5280 Legion wants to extend a personal thank you to all of the organizers, judges and volunteers who made it possible. You all did an incredible job and have our gratitude. (Special kudos to those who wore 5280 gear of their own!). It was great to see all of you, and we look forward to the next event. If you ever need help, know you can count on 5280 Legion for all of the support we can provide.
